Desi Donors are urgently calling for members of the Asian & Ethnic Minoroties to come forward and save the lives of patients who are desperately waiting to find a suitable Bone marrow, Blood and Organ donors.
Desi Donors has been set up to promote and raise awareness for Bone Marrow , Blood and Organ Donors, in Asian and Ethnic communities. Desi Donors launched July 09 and is proactively helping Asian patients find the right match so they can help live. however there are not enough Asians & Ethnic Minoroties on the registers so matches are not being found.
There are 400,000 people on the Anthony Nolan Trust register, however only 4% of those are just Asian, making it almost impossible for an Asian patient to find a suitable match.
The facts are as simple as this: If you're a white person there is a 1 in 3 chance of finding a match, but if you're Asian there is only a 1 in 125,000 chance of finding a match.
Desi Donors are working with the Anthony Nolan Trust , National Blood Service and NHS Organ Donor Register to get more people on the registers and help save lives.
"We set up Desi Donors because we felt there wasn't anything dedicated specifically to the Asian community to promote the need for Bone Marrow donors. We were inspired to set up Desi Donors after meeting Dean Sheikh a young boy who desperately needed a Bone Marrow donor in late 2007, (however Dean recently lost his battle and passed away on October 22nd 2009).Desi Donors will hopefully raise people's awareness on how important it is to register. Setting up Desi Donors has been one of the most important things we have ever done,"
